Es un m\u00e9todo confiable cuya eficacia se deriva de su capacidad para tratar muestras de forma r\u00e1pida y conveniente dentro de un sistema cerrado sin perder nada de la muestra o de sus productos de combusti\u00f3n. Todos los hidrocarburos se oxidan a di\u00f3xido de carbono y agua por la reacci\u00f3n, y todos los compuestos de azufre se convierten en formas solubles y se absorben en un peque\u00f1a cantidad de agua colocada en la vaso. Los compuestos org\u00e1nicos de cloro se convierten en HCl o cloruros. Cualquier componente mineral permanece como ceniza, pero otros elementos inorg\u00e1nicos como ars\u00e9nico, boro y todos los hal\u00f3genos son recuperados con el lavado de vaso.
