New Parr Custom Calorimeters

Introducing the 1109X High Strength Semimicro Oxygen Combustion Vessel

Parr is a distinctive calorimeter producer in the market. It is well known that a large portion of Parr’s business is custom built reactor systems. However, few know that Parr builds custom calorimeters for special tasks as well.

Custom External Catalyst Addition Devices

New Custom External Catalyst Addition Device on 4563

Recently, we have offered custom external catalyst addition devices (XCAD) for some of our systems to compliment our standard atmospheric XCADs. The new design allows customers to add the catalyst while the system is under pressure and heated to a set temperature. It can even be used in place of our solids charging port (SCP) for some systems.

Local Students Visit Parr

This week we hosted students taking physical chemistry classes from St. Ambrose University and Monmouth College. During their visits the students learned more about combustion calorimetry and were familiarized with real world calorimeters and applications. They also received an overview of the reactor side of our business.

Parr’s new 4878 Automated Liquid Sampler allows the collection of multiple samples at a user defined interval without requiring the presence of an operator for sample collection. In addition, the contents of the dip tube and sample line can be cleared between each sample to ensure each sample is representative of the fluid inside the reactor at the time of sample collection.

Myth: Parr Instrument Company has a connection with MythBusters

Steve Lierly with the 6050 Calorimeter and 1110 Vessel that appeared on Mythbusters
Steve Lierly with the 6050 Calorimeter and 1110 Vessel that appeared on MythBusters

CONFIRMED

Parr Instrument Company’s technical expertise was requested by Discovery Channel’s MythBusters television program to help provide data for one of their myths. The myth in question was if a rocket could be fueled with gummy bears or fecal matter. The MythBusters team contacted Parr for help determining the calorific values for each potential fuel.  A calorimeter is the instrument of choice when experimentally determining the energy release of solid and liquid fuels.

Parr’s Calorimeter Product Manager Steve Lierly visited the set of the show in California to run tests with Parr’s newest calorimeter, the 6050 Compensated Jacket Calorimeter. Mr. Lierly and the calorimeter appear in MythBusters “Rocketmen” episode which originally aired on February 20, 2016.
